Everyone knows the iconic editor in chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour. I almost automatically picture her trademark bob hair and dark sunglasses when I hear her name, but one more thing that makes this image in my head is her layered collect necklaces. The necklaces that have become almost as much a part of her iconic style as her bob hair!
I remember being in fashion school, studying Anna Wintour’s style and being obsessed with her collection of collect necklaces. Do a quick google image search and see what I am talking about. You will find plenty of images of her wearing multiple layers of these beautiful necklaces in almost all her pictures. Recently I have been seeing a lot of ads on my Instagram from Masterclass – the online education platform offering a course taught by Anna Wintour on Creativity and Leadership. I noticed her wearing Collet necklaces in multiple clips of those ads, and it gain made me think of this essential statement piece.
What’s a collet necklace:
Popular since the Georgian era, collet or rivière is a necklace that is comprised of gemstones of the same species that are all the same size and shape or graduate smoothly in size. A Collet setting is designed as a ring or rim of metal, rising perpendicular to the surface of the item and designed to encircle the girdle of a gemstone. The upper edge of the collet is pressed over onto the crown of the stone thereby securing the gem in place. Collets can be completely plain or delicately decorative when enhanced by carving, piercing and/or millegraining.
Here are 10 of my favourite pictures of Anna Wintour wearing these beautiful necklaces, starting with most recent from the Masterclass ad and ending with one that dates back to 1990s!
Why you need it:
The classic design of the necklace makes this a timeless style, which means you will be able to wear for years and eventually pass it on as a family heirloom. Added bonus: It’s Anna Wintour Approved! See the picture above from 1990s? Anna has been wearing it for atleast past 20 years!
How to style it:
I think statement jewellery can elevate any look, and these necklaces are no exception. You can literally pair it with any outfit and make it look like a million bucks. I would style these with t-shirts, and blazers for a more understated day time look and with dresses and gowns for evening looks.
Where to get it:
Apparently Anna Wintour gets hers from British jewellers, S.J. Phillips. These approximately cost $25,000 – $60,000 a piece. You can usually find similar ones from antique and vintage jewellery shops. I have also found some affordable versions on Etsy.
What do you think? Have you noticed these on Anna before? Would you add a collet to your collection? Let me know in the comments down below or on my Instagram, I would love to know!
